Garage Door Weatherstripping

Did You Know?

Even the most well-fitted garage doors can have natural gaps that allow dust, debris, water, or pests into your garage? Professionally installed weatherstripping, also known as weather seals, can close these gaps around the entrances. Schedule an appointment today with Action Door by Modern Day Garage.

Garage Door Weatherstripping & Seals in Elyria

Weatherstripping is among the least expensive components on a garage door and has a disproportionate effect on the temperature and condition of the garage through winter.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Weatherstripping

  • Daylight visible beneath the door when closed
  • Water entering after rain, or snow blowing under the door
  • A visible gap at one end where the floor slab has settled
  • Rubber that has hardened, cracked or flattened
  • Rodent entry, which most commonly occurs at a failed bottom seal
  • The seal freezing to the concrete and tearing when the door is raised

Components of A Seal

  1. The bottom seal is the rubber strip housed in the retainer along the base of the door, and is the first component to wear.
  2. The perimeter stop is the moulding fixed to the door jamb that the door closes against at both sides and the head; on doors over approximately fifteen years old it has usually hardened.
  3. The threshold seal is fitted to the floor rather than the door, and is specified where the concrete has settled and the resulting gap is too large for a bottom seal to close.

Weatherstripping & Seals During Winter

Where a bottom seal freezes to the concrete each winter and tears on opening, the underlying cause is usually water standing beneath the door due to slab pitch or driveway settlement rather than a fault with the seal itself. A threshold seal addresses the cause; repeated bottom seal replacement does not.

Supplied & Fitted Seals

Bottom seals slide into the retainer and can be fitted by most homeowners with the door closed. We stock them by the foot in the common profiles – bring a short offcut of the existing seal so the profile can be matched. Perimeter stop and threshold seals are normally fitted by a technician.
